By Tim Davidson Nov 18, 2024 | 1:32 PM

The Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation has voted yes to stay involved in the site selection process of a deep underground nuclear waste repository.

A spokesperson for the First Nation says the vote was done in person and electronically over the past few days.

The exact totals of the vote have not been released.

Chief Clayton Wetelainen says they have been involved in the process for the past 12 years and the yes vote shows they are committed to staying on this path.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization says it will decide this year about a site selection for the nuclear waste facility between the Bruce Peninsula and the Igance area.

The Town of Ignace has already voted yes to continue on in the site selection process.

The Wabigoon First Nation says it make take a decade for the NWMO to finalize its plan and this is just the beginning of a long process.
