$262-million for new homes in Ontario

It’s a major housing investment to help build and renovate homes in our region.

The feds are announcing more than $260-million for 691 new homes in Ontario, with a focus on northern, rural, and Indigenous communities.

“This is really good news for many First Nations as well that are struggling with housing in their Community,” explained Thunder Bay-Superior North MP, Patty Hadju. “Oftentimes people have to leave their communities because the housing is just not available. I’ve heard stories as a Minister of Indigenous services with people sharing homes up to 15 or even more people in a house, and it’s hard to imagine what that’s like.”

Hadju made the announcement at the North End Community Centre in Thunder Bay next door to the Huron Avenue project, which received $4.8 million to build 24 one-bedroom apartments and will be operated by Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services (OAHS), on behalf of the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Sean Fraser.

The homes are near local schools, parks, and public transit.

New builds will take place in communities around Thunder Bay, Red Lake, Dryden Kenora, Fort Frances and Lac Seul to highlight a few.

“Areas in northern Ontario that often may not seem like there’s a housing or homelessness problem in smaller communities like that, but many times that lack of affordable housing leads people to very difficult circumstances, and this money is going to support smaller communities to build units that are affordable and available immediately,” added Hadju.

The funding for all of the projects outside of Thunder Bay is coming through the Rapid Housing Initiative, which provides funding to help build new housing faster and acquire existing buildings for rehabilitation or conversion to permanent affordable housing units.

The Project in Thunder Bay is receiving its money through the Affordable Housing Fund.
