A New Brunswick RCMP officer has been charged with theft and breach of trust by a public officer.
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) announced the charges in a news release on Monday.
SiRT said it received a referral from the New Brunswick RCMP in April regarding “missing and unaccounted for exhibits, including cash, that had been previously seized in the course of an investigation.”
Const. Christopher Sorensen, a member of the Provincial Crime Reduction Unit located in Woodstock, was charged on Monday.
He is scheduled to appear in Woodstock provincial court on Oct. 30 to answer to the charges.
“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SiRT will not provide further comment on the investigation,” said the release.
SiRT investigates all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in New Brunswick.
