Elspeth McLean-Wile elected as MODL mayor, Shelburne votes in first Black mayor

By Evan Taylor Oct 19, 2024 | 7:18 PM

Long-time business owner Elspeth McLean-Wile has unseated the incumbent mayor in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg (MODL).

McLean-Wile received over 6,000 votes, while Carolyn Bolivar-Getson secured just under 4,000.

In other results, Martin E. Bell was acclaimed in District 2, and incumbents Wendy Oickle, Pam Hubley, and Cathy Moore successfully retained their seats in Districts 3, 4, and 5, respectively.

Newcomer Morgen Reinhardt won in District 1, Alison Smith secured victory in District 6, and Edgar Burns was elected in District 7.

Kacy DeLong was re-elected in District 8, and Chasidy Veinotte and Diane Racette were acclaimed in their respective races for District 10 and the CSAP.

Town of Mahone Bay

Suzanne Lohnes-Croft has been elected as the new Mayor of Mahone Bay, defeating challenger Tony Sampson. Lohnes-Croft, a former Liberal MLA for Lunenburg, transitioned to her role as a councillor after winning a by-election in November 2022.

The Mahone Bay council will feature several new faces alongside returning members, with Joseph Maxwell Feeney, Colin Kingsmill, Bryan Palfreyman, Rebecca Twanow, and Kelly Wilson all elected to serve.

Penny Carver also secured a council seat.

Town of Lunenburg

Jamie Myra has been re-elected as Mayor of the Town of Lunenburg, defeating challenger Jesse Ward, the former editor-in-chief of The Barnacle.

A lifelong resident and owner of Stan’s Dad and Lad, Myra brings decades of experience to his role, having served 12 years as a town councillor and Deputy Mayor.

His victory comes after a campaign focused on tackling infrastructure issues, enhancing policing, and increasing housing opportunities to strengthen the town’s tax base.

The newly elected Town of Lunenburg Council also includes Renea Babineau, Rachel Bailey, Debbie Dauphinee, Gale Fullerton, Alex Greek, and Alison Strachan.

Voter turnout reached 65.8%, slightly surpassing the previous municipal election’s 64.1 percent participation rate.

A swearing-in ceremony for the new Council will take place on October 30 at the Lunenburg Fire Hall, with further details to be announced.

Town of Bridgewater

David Mitchell has been acclaimed as Mayor of Bridgewater, marking another term in his long-standing tenure that began with his first election to council in 2004 and his subsequent appointment as mayor in 2016.
Mitchell has focused on infrastructure improvements, economic growth, and community engagement during his time in office. He expressed gratitude to the residents for their continued trust and highlighted the town’s progress over the past eight years.

The newly elected council members include incumbents Cheryl Fougere, Stacey Colwell, Jennifer McDonald, Mike Conklin, as well as newcomers Eric Whynot and Braden Newell.
