Port Hawkesbury mayor re-elected, Sean Cameron wins in Antigonish

By News Oct 19, 2024 | 7:26 PM

Port Hawkesbury Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton has been re-elected for a third term.

Chisholm-Beaton received 723 votes, or 41 per cent support in Saturday’s municipal election.

That was compared to 693 votes for Archie MacLachlan and 314 votes for Jason Aucoin.

Chisholm-Beaton tells our newsroom that she didn’t take anything for granted.

“It feels great to know that I will be able to serve as mayor for the next four years to continue the momentum of positive growth we’ve been experiencing.”

She adds that she really wants to congratulate every single person who put their name forward because it is “no easy thing.”

Among the four councillors elected on Saturday, Paula Hart became just the fifth woman in the town’s history to serve on council, according to Chisholm-Beaton.

“She broke a little bit of a glass ceiling tonight, which is nice.”

Iaian Langley and Todd Barrett are also newly elected while Blaine MacQuarrie was re-elected.

Sean Cameron elected mayor in Antigonish

Sean Cameron will be the next mayor of Antigonish, according to the unofficial results from the town.

The long-time councillor received 1,121 votes, or 58 per cent support in the election. That was compared to 809 votes for contender Emilie Chiasson.

Two familiar faces will also be around the council table, with Andrew Murray and Diane Roberts being re-elected.

They will be joined by Leon MacLellan, Juanita Pelly, Patrick McKenna and Jack Sullivan.

Long-time Guysborough District warden defeated

An upset in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough where the long-time warden has been defeated.

Vernon Pitts was up against Susan Cashin in the election to represent residents of District 6.

Cashin received 224 votes, or around 68 per cent, while Pitts received 106 votes.

Pitts was first elected to council in 1994 and became warden in 2013 after serving as deputy warden since 2008.

District 6 was the only race not acclaimed in the municipality.

Richmond County warden re-elected

The last warden of the Municipality of the County of Richmond will return to the council table.

Amanda Mombourquette was one of two people running in District 4.

Mombourquette received 624 votes while contender Gilbert Boucher received 364 votes.

The new council will choose the warden at their next council meeting.
