Three people are dead and three are injured after two tragic crashes on Highway 101 in Nova Scotia.

The first happened just before 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

RCMP say five vehicles collided on the highway near Wolfville. A transport truck was travelling east when it hit five vehicles that were stopped for construction.

Police say two people in a black GMC Acadia, a 62-year-old woman and a child, both from East Kingston, died at the scene.

The third person in the vehicle, a 40-year-old woman, was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

No one else was reported injured in that crash, police say.

The second crash happened Monday just before 4 p.m. on Highway 101 near Berwick.

The RCMP says a Dodge Journey and a Ford F-150 were travelling in opposite directions when they collided.

The only person in the Dodge, a 38-year-old man from Middleton, died at the scene. The 49-year-old driver and 19-year-old passenger of the F150, both from Greenwood, were airlifted to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

After both accidents, a collision reconstructionist visited the scene and the highway was closed for several hours.

The investigations continue.
