Still no word on the cause of a Church Street fire that left at least 11 people displaced.

Moncton Fire arrived at around 9:45 am on Sunday to find heavy smoke coming from the attic.

“We responded with two engines, two trucks, rescue for a total of 17 firefighters who aggressively went to the second floor and extinguished the fire in the attic. We were also able to confirm that all the occupants of the building were evacuated. It took approximately an hour and a half to get the fire under control,” says Platoon Chief Brad Calhoun.

The Canadian Red Cross assisted those who evacuated safely.

Seventeen firefighters were on the scene to help battle the blaze and it took around 90 minutes to get the fire under control.

A firefighter was treated at the hospital and then released a short time later.

Calhoun adds that some of the older homes with older electrical can pose some challenges, but in this case, the fire was in the ceiling between the second floor and the walk-up attic.

“It did bring some challenges, but also it allowed our firefighters easier access to the attic to get at it and to perform overhaul,” Calhoun added.

Smoke, water and fire damage is extensive. He says it will take some time for the building to be assessed and repaired before any tenants are allowed back in.

Donations are needed for the men who were living in the residence.
