Saint John police launch aggressive driving campaign

By Regis Phillips Oct 11, 2024 | 5:10 PM

The Saint John Police Force is launching an aggressive driving campaign from October 14 to 18 to improve road safety.

This initiative aims to deter reckless driving and hold offenders accountable for endangering others.

Officers will focus on educating the public and enforcing laws against dangerous driving practices, including speeding, tailgating, unsafe lane changes, ignoring traffic signals and driving without proper attention.

Police remind drivers that New Brunswick enforces tougher consequences for dangerous driving behaviours:

  • Exceeding the speed limit by 50 to 80 km/h per hour will result in a $500 penalty, five demerit points and your vehicle being impounded for seven days.
  • If you speed 80 km/h over the posted limit, it is a $1,000 fine, six demerit points and a 30-day vehicle impoundment.

Officers are reminding drivers to:

  • Stick to the speed limit
  • Practice patience by limiting lane changes, and signalling your turns
  • Allow other drivers to merge or change lanes safely
  • Keep your attention on the road by steering clear of distractions
  • Maintain a proper distance from the car in front
  • Reduce your speed in construction zones
  • Follow all posted signs
