Stellarton’s own speed-eater Mike Jack recently took home two more Guinness World Records.
He set the record for fastest person to drink a Capri Sun juice pouch through a paper straw and the most hot sauce eaten in 3 minutes.
Jack built his YouTube channel, Mike Jack Eats Heat, on eating spicy foods as fast as possible. So far, he’s grabbed 17 Guinness World Records, according to his website, some for eating spicy and non-spicy foods.
To beat the Capri Sun record, Jack drank all the juice in the pouch in 21.71 seconds.
“It’s actually a pretty challenging record,” he said.
You have to start with your hands on the table, he said, and pierce the plastic with a paper straw. Once you drink the Capri Sun, then they cut the package open to measure how much liquid is left, too. It has to be less than half a teaspoon, according to the Guinness World Records website.
Adjudicator Juliet Dawson was there to confirm that Jack set the record on his seventh try.
“A lot can go wrong with the paper straw,” he said, adding that the plastic one punctures the plastic much more easily.
Before he attempted to eat the most hot sauce in three minutes, Jack emptied two bottles of Sriracha sauce into a bowl.
Armed with a teaspoon, he dug in and finished 1.12 kg or 2 lbs 7 0z in three minutes.
The teaspoon makes it a bit harder, he said.
“You can’t chug it. You can’t really use a big spoon, stuff like that. You just got to go really fast with a spoon, get as much as you can.”
Jack said the previous record was 300 grams.
“So, yeah, I killed it,” he said. “Pretty awesome.”
A lot of speed eaters struggle with what he calls flavour fatigue. When you eat too much of the same flavour, it starts to “not taste very good,” he said.
He certainly struggled with it during this record attempt, he said, but he tried to think of something else, like pumpkin pie puree.
“I just love pumpkin pie. You know, it’s the season, too.”
