Province allows 17 RVs for homeless at Shubie Park this winter

The province is adding five more RV spaces to Shubie Park this winter, for those experiencing homelessness.

The campground was left open last year and allowed 12 RVs to set up shop, costing the province $180,000.

This year, they are spending $145,000 to expand it to 17, a decision made mere weeks before the campground was set to close.

The province says the agreement had been in progress between Nova Scotia and HRM for several weeks and they received the final funding proposal, Wednesday.

Minister of Community Services Brendan Maguire told reporters, Thursday afternoon, the deal is signed, sealed and delivered.

“The individuals that are staying there, it’s a takes a little bit of nervousness and unknown from them.”

Maguire said the situation is tough and the province is looking at every possible solution to tackle the housing crisis.

“What we want to do is get people from homelessness to permanent housing and there are many options to get it there…whether it’s the pallet villages, the tiny homes… we are looking at every option.”

When pressed about the decision coming down to the wire, Maguire added that communication with vulnerable Nova Scotians need to be better.

“We are going to look into it, and if there was a lack of communication on the province or HRM side, we will make sure that is addressed.”

Rent will be $250 that includes electricity and waste management.

Those offered the spots will be contacted over the coming days.

Halifax Council mulled over whether to made RVs temporary homes during a meeting in April.

Staff said, to make it permittable, zoning would have to change.
