Two people have died following a four-vehicle crash in Pointe-Alexandre on the Acadian Peninsula.

RCMP said it happened at Route 313 and Pointe-Alexandre Road around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Investigators believe a truck towing a trailer tried to avoid colliding with a vehicle stopped at a stop sign.

“The truck crossed the centre line and collided head-on with another vehicle. The truck and trailer left the roadway and caught fire,” Mounties said in a news release.

The lone person in the truck, a 61-year-old man from Coteau Road, died in the hospital from his injuries.

An 81-year-old woman from Miscou, who was a passenger in the vehicle that collided with the truck, died at the scene. The driver suffered minor injuries.

A fourth vehicle also collided with the vehicle involved in the head-on crash. The lone occupant was not physically hurt.
