Child in hospital from Boulder Bear Summer Camp

8-year-old in hospital after injuries sustained at Boulder Bear Climbing Centre.

Thunder Bay resident looks for answers after finding her child injured at Boulder Bear Climbing Centre.

Lexi Lehtinen dropped off her 8-year-old daughter, Natalia, at Boulder Bear’s summer camp and returned to find her injured and nearly unconscious.

Staff did not call EMS when she fell over 20 feet from a climbing structure.

“They called me to say she was crying and that I should come pick her up, but the phone call showed no sense of urgency,” said Lehtinen. “When I showed up, the owner showed me where she fell from, and she was mostly unresponsive. She was holding her chest and telling me her heart hurt.”

Lehtinen rushed her daughter to the hospital covered in blood to find she had a collapsed lung and broken wrist.

“She’s still struggling and couldn’t keep her food down for days and slept for the better half of the week.”

Her daughter was attending the summer camp from July 22 to 26 and fell on the last day. Lehtinen says the centre will not provide a refund.

Natalia claims she was not clipped into her harness properly, but owner of Boulder Bear told Lehtinen that was not the case.

“They claimed this is the result of my daughter’s behavioral issues and that they are not liable for what happened,” said Lehtinen.

She shared her daughter’s story on Facebook in hopes to find witnesses that saw what happened.

Boulder Bear Climbing Centre said they would not like to comment at this time.
