An Elsipogtog First Nation man has been charged in a southeastern New Brunswick drug trafficking investigation.

Mounties said they learned on Thursday that a “new and extremely dangerous” drug containing carfentanil was believed to be circulating in the area.

The following day, officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Main Street in Elsipogtog First Nation.

A 38-year-old man was arrested at the scene and appeared in court on Tuesday to face five charges:

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl
• Possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine
• Trafficking methamphetamine
• Trafficking fentanyl
• Obstruction of a peace officer

The man was remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 6.

Mounties recently issued a warning about an “extremely dangerous substance” circulating in southeastern New Brunswick after learning of a sudden death in Jardineville on Thursday.

“Through the course of the investigation, police determined that the individual’s death is likely related to the use of a drug believed to have been purchased in Elsipogtog First Nation,” RCMP said in a news release on Saturday.

“The drug is believed to contain carfentanil, a synthetic opioid that is significantly stronger than fentanyl, possibly in a blue or green powder form.”

RCMP did not say whether the two incidents are connected.
