Insurance claims from 2023 N.S. wildfires, floods nears half-billion dollar mark

Insurance claims from last year’s wildfires and floods in Nova Scotia are nearly a half billion dollars.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada says there have been $490 million in total insured losses.

They say more than 88 percent of claims related to the Tantallon wildfire, and 90 percent of the July 2023 floods have been resolved.

In a new report, the bureau says a lack of skilled labourers and building materials were hurdles in the process.

Feedback suggests a need to improve information flow in disaster management.

The bureau says the back-to-back disasters highlighted the challenges of managing events like this in quick succession.
