U.S. President Joe Biden exiting race and “passing the torch”

By News Jul 24, 2024 | 9:51 PM

The president of the United States is set to step away after a remarkable turn of events.

Joe Biden addressed the nation on Wednesday night from the Oval Office, in his first public appearance since announcing he would not run in the next election.

”I have been privileged to serve this nation for over 50 years and have given my heart and my soul, like so many others have,” said Biden. “I hope you know how grateful I am to all of you.”

Biden, 81, was facing tremendous pressure from within his own party to step aside after a horrendous showing in a recent debate against Republican challenger Donald Trump.

He has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the campaign and appear on the ballot for the Democrats in November.

It is the fourth Oval Office address for Biden since his presidency began.

“I revere this office, but I love my country more. It’s been the honour of my life to serve as your president. But in the defense of democracy, which is at stake, I think it’s more important than any title.” offered Biden.

Biden will remain the president until Americans choose their next leader.
