New banners celebrate history, heritage of Salisbury

You may have noticed new banners hanging on dozens of utility poles in Salisbury.

It is one of several initiatives to mark 250 years of permanent settlement in the area.

Katy Doucette, the town’s strategic events coordinator, said the banners highlight different people, places, and things.

“We had set out a public nomination form that was released late last year that allowed residents to nominate who they thought would be deserving of this recognition,” said Doucette.

“Through an extensive voting process and a lot of discussions, our Salisbury 250 Committee came to a final consensus.”

The 41 banners have been installed on a number of central streets in the community, including Main Street, River Road, and Fredericton Road.

“We already had brackets there from the veteran banners that we do in October and November during the Poppy Campaign,” said Doucette.

“The number of 41 banners kind of helped in that process as well because we were limited of how many brackets were on streets with sidewalks.”

An online write-up accompanies each banner, and printed guides are also available.

The town held a guided walking tour along the banner route in late June. Doucette said they may plan to do more throughout the summer months.

The banners will stay in place until the veteran banners are installed this fall.

As for what happens to them after, Doucette said they are still having conversations about that.

“I know a few people who, family members of those individuals who they see on those banners, they’re incredibly proud to have them up there,” she said.

“We’ve had a few people reach out and ask if they can actually have the banner afterwards.”
