Path renaming to honour three Moncton police officers

The paths in Bore Park will be renamed to honour three Moncton police officers.

They are Constable Joseph Steadman, Constable Michael O’Leary and Corporal Aurele Bourgeois…

Steadman was shot and killed in 1892 while investigating a break-and-enter in Moncton’s downtown.

O’Leary and Bourgeois were abducted and murdered in December 1974.

Former members of the Moncton Police Force have consulted with the families of the officers and they offered their support.

The plan is to have the work finished by the fall of this year, for the 50th anniversary in December.

Moncton council voted in favour of the trail renaming. The cost of up to $10,000 will be taken from the council contingency account.

Councillor Bryan Butler is a retired police officer who says these tragedies are still fresh on the minds of many.

“I came here in 1979 as a police officer, and it happened in 74, but the tension was still here. We didn’t know too much about PTSD at the time, and things have really changed regards to that, thank goodness,” Butler stated. “This means a lot to the families to be recognized and on the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

Butler adds they hope to hold a gathering on December 13 to honour the officers.
