Thunder Bay’s Michela Cava wins PWHL Walter Cup

Minnesota wins big as they beat Boston 3-0 in the PWHL finals.

Thunder Bay’s own Michela Cava assisted in the win. In the third period, she poked the puck through the legs of Boston’s goalie, Aerin Frankel, to make the score 2-0.

“It’s always nice to win the trophy at the end of the year, regardless of what you’re playing in,” Cava told TSN.

Minnesota struggled to the end of the PWHL season and snuck into the playoffs on the season’s last day, when Ottawa was eliminated with a loss to Toronto. Then Minnesota lost the first two games of its semifinal to Toronto, before they switched things around. They came back in the semifinal, flying into the Walter Cup final against Boston.

“Seeing all like the little girls and boys around the glass with their signs and cheering us on, for me it probably was the most exciting part of really getting this league together and having kind of everybody cheering for one league and one group of girls.”

Cava’s hockey career began with winning the Esso Cup with the Thunder Bay Queens in 2010 and with Team Ontario Red at the 2011 nationals. Since then, her career has boomed. She played for the Toronto Six before joining Minnesota last year.

The team will kick off the championship celebrations tonight at the Xcel Energy Center.
