Construction on the future National Marine Conservation Area headquarters in Nipigon has come to a halt after human remains were found on site.

Parks Canada confirmed these as human remains on May 21, and said that construction was paused immediately upon discovery.

According to the Ontario Coroner’s Office, the remains were those of an Indigenous man who may have lived in the area sometime before the 1600s.

The $37 million project began construction just under four weeks ago and has already been put on hold twice.

The first pause due to the finding of animal remains and other artifacts.

Construction will not continue until the area is further assessed.
