Ford promises long term care beds for Sioux Lookout

By Tim Davidson May 29, 2024 | 9:35 AM

Renewed calls for long term care beds in Sioux Lookout.

Kiiwetinoog MPP Sol Mamakwa raised the issues at Queen’s Park yesterday.

In Oji-Cree, and through a translator, Mamakwa says the government had promised  the beds years ago, but they have yet to materialize.

“Waiting is not acceptable when the problem is getting worse,” Mamakwa explain the Ontario Legislature Tuesday morning during Question Period.

“The 76 beds promised in 2018 will not meet the need for 100 beds needed in 2025.”

Premier Doug Ford promised personally that the long term care beds in Sioux Lookout would be built.

“I went up to Sioux Lookout and you remember I went up there.  I committed that I’m going to build that long term care home.  I’m committing today, in the public,  we will be building those beds.  We will be building a home.”

The Meno Ya Win Health Center in Sioux Lookout says the current wait time for a long term care bed is seven years.
