NS teachers voting on tentative deal

By Kelli Rickard May 22, 2024 | 11:44 AM

Nova Scotia teachers will vote on a tentative contract agreement Wednesday.

The government and the NSTU reached an ‘agreement in principle’ April 17th.

It came a week after 98 per cent of members had voted in favour of strike action.

The NSTU also held rallies in April to draw attention to mounting issues which president Ryan Lutes said included violence in schools and an ongoing teacher shortage.

Premier Tim Houston announced the new deal, saying it is fair to teachers and includes improved classroom conditions.

The current four-year contract for the 10,000 members expired in 2023.

Full details on the agreement won’t be released until it’s been ratified.
