A coroner’s inquest has been scheduled into the 2022 death of an inmate in custody in New Brunswick.

Jason Barnaby-Gloade was found unresponsive in a cell at the Dalhousie Regional Correctional Centre on May 28, 2022.

The 39-year-old man was rushed to the hospital in Campbellton, where he was pronounced dead later that same day.

Barnaby-Gloade was being held on remand awaiting a court appearance on June 6, according to a news release from the Department of Justice at the time.

Five days have been set aside for the mandatory coroner’s inquest next week. Jury selection is slated to begin Monday afternoon at the Campbellton courthouse.

Deputy Chief Coroner Emily Caissy and a jury will publicly hear evidence from witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death.

While the jury will not make any finding of legal responsibility, it can make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths in the future.
