Search for missing canoeists in Minnesota

By Randy Thoms May 21, 2024 | 3:53 PM

Two people remain missing after two canoes went over Curtain Falls on Iron Lake in the Boundary Wilderness Canoe Area.

This incident happened early Saturday evening.

St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says two men, a 47-year-old and a 43-year-old from Ham Lake, Minnesota, were rescued and airlifted to hospital in Duluth for treatment of what was described as serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Officials have been searching since Saturday for the others.

They have been using remote operated vehicles and drones.

The Sheriff’s department says rapid water conditions were making the search difficult.

Authorities have identified the missing canoeists as 41-year-old Jesse Melvin Haugen from Cambridge, Minnesota, and 40-year-old Reis Melvin Grams from Lino Lakes.

A 33-year-old man, who was with the group but not in the canoes at the time was also flown from the area.
