NSTU needs run-off election to determine new president

By Caitlin Snow May 16, 2024 | 10:10 AM

Members of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union will have to wait a little longer to find out who their new president will be.

The union says there was a vote Wednesday, but no clear winner, so, there will be a run-off election, May 29.

Three members have been dropped from the running, Nancy de la Chevotiere, Grant Frost and Mike Kelly.

This narrows the candidates down to Peter Day and Shawn Hanifen.

To win, you must receive 50 per cent of the vote, but plus one.

Sixty-nine per cent of members voted.

Current President Ryan Lutes was voted in, in 2022, with his two-year term slated to end August 1.
