Free compost is now available at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility while supplies last.

“With the mild weather this spring, residents have been awaiting the opening of our compost pick-up,” said Manager of Solid Waste & Recycling Services Jason Sherband. “The leaf and yard waste that comes in from our curbside collection programs is blended with organic waste, and then composted to create a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers for use in landscaping, flower beds and lawns.”

The compost pick-up area is located east of the old landfill entrance on John Street Road.

Hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 pm.

The city is asking residents who have garbage or recycling to dispose of their items at the landfill before visiting the compost pick-up area.

Make sure to bring a shovel and some bags or containers to carry compost home.

Quantities are limited to a maximum of one half-ton load per resident.
