Fun, magic and mayhem in RHS production of ‘Puffs’

It’s described as a story for anyone who was never destined to save the world.

The Riverview High School Drama Club presents its production of ‘Puffs’ from Friday, May 9 through Sunday, May 11.

“It happens at a certain school of magic and magic, on the same timeline as the story of Harry Potter. It focuses on the other kids who are not featured as heroes of the story,” says Director Melanie Mealey.

Auditions were held in February, and over 100 students and staff are involved in the production.

“We have a cast of 16 and we have a stage crew of five. We have a tech crew, and several shop classes constructed the set. We’ve had the fashion tech classes design some of the costumes and props,” Mealey says.

Grade 11 student Raymond DeCoste plays Wayne in the production, “I was in a production last year and I had a lot of fun. I really love theatre, but I don’t have much of a chance to do it outside of extracurricular school activities. I thought this would be perfect. It’s a bigger cast than I’m used to. But we’ve all become friends. Everyone gets along really well. And it’s a lot of fun on and off stage.”

There are four performances of Pulls at the Riverview Arts Centre, three evening performances and a matinee on Saturday.

Tickets can be purchased at the door as well as online through school cash online.

Mealey says it is a funny and fast-paced play, “It draws on the original material, so anyone who has nostalgia for having grown up with the wizarding world will love it, but also people who just enjoy a good underdog story will enjoy it as well. There are a couple of moments that are a little more intense for younger viewers, but the play is generally suitable for ages eight and up.”

DeCoste also recommends to any students at Riverview High interested in drama to try it.

“If you really want to do theatre, don’t let your anxieties about being, the best audition or the worst audition get in the way of that.”
