Study shows Port of Yarmouth generates $50M per year

By Kevin Northup May 8, 2024 | 11:24 AM

A new study shows the Port of Yarmouth generates $50 million a year for the local economy.

That includes 280 jobs and hosting over 40 vessels.

The port also accounted for $25 million of Nova Scotia’s fishing GDP over the last five years.

The economic impact study says between 44 and 85 million pounds of lobsters are landed per year, as well as other species of fish.

The study through the Yarmouth Area Industrial Commission was to gain a better understanding of the importance of the port to the region.

They note that improvements are needed, with aging port infrastructure, and they’re looking to get support from funding agencies.

It’s jointly owned by the town and municipalities of Yarmouth and Argyle.
