The federal government through FedNor has announced a $181,800 investment to support four youth internship positions in Northern Ontario.

“These internships will provide a fair chance for young people in Northern Ontario to develop their skills and fully participate in our economy,” explained the Minister responsible for FedNor Patty Hadju. “This is part of our plan to grow an economy in our region that works for every generation so that young people can grow up in Northern Ontario with equitable opportunities.”

The Northern Policy Institute is receiving more than half the funding, a total of $110,000 for two different internship positions focused on transportation analysis and research. The youth interns will work to refine transportation priorities and assess the potential of key transportation investments in Northern Ontario.

Lakehead University Agricultural Research Station is receiving $36,800 to support one internship that ill focus on fostering innovation and expanding agri-food research in Northwestern Ontario.

The remaining $35,000 will support the Centre for Research and Innovation in the Bio-Economy (CRIBE) in creating a policy analyst youth internship position focused on forest bio-economics.

These positions will provide specialized training and valuable experience to four youth interns, helping to develop young talent in Northern Ontario.

In addition to the internships, the investments will help support the creation of multiple reports and studies relating to potential innovation and improvements in several critical areas.
