Halifax police officer charged with hitting female while off-duty: SiRT

A Halifax police officer faces charges after he allegedly assaulted a female he knew while off-duty.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) says the Halifax Regional Police notified them of on Oct. 26, 2023 of a an alleged domestic assault.

SiRT launched an investigation and found they had “reasonable and probable grounds” that Const. Robert Baird assaulted a female he knew between Jan. 1, 2020 and Sept. 1, 2021.

According to a report, SiRT interviewed the victim and three civilian witnesses. Other evidence was also gathered.

Baird was charged Tuesday and will appear in court May 14.

SiRT operates under a civilian director and investigates injuries and potentially criminal incidents involving police in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
