Hard-shell MACPASS to be phased-out by end of year

By Caitlin Snow May 6, 2024 | 6:00 AM

If you are still using the hard shell MACPASS to cross the harbour, you have until the end of the year to switch over to the sticker.

Halifax Harbour Bridges says they are phasing out the hard-shells as part of their ‘continuing efforts’ to upgrade the tolling system.

MACPASS transponders were introduced 25 years ago.

HHB says, the hard-shells are reaching the end of their life.

CEO Tony Wright says back then flip phones were a ‘hot technology’ and MP3’s were on the rise.

”Needless to say technology has advanced significantly in all areas, including tolling and our users deserve the best options available.”

The sticker was introduced three years ago for all new customers.

HHB says they not only read better at the tolls but are also compatible with e-tolling options they are pursuing.

The goal is to fully make the switch by December 31.
