Breathalyzer mandatory during all traffic stops in HRM for May: RCMP

By Caitlin Snow May 4, 2024 | 7:10 AM

During the month of May, RCMP will do a breathalyzer test during all traffic stops in HRM.

RCMP say they will not stop drivers just to do the Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS), but you will have to complete the test during any other traffic stop that you are pulled over for, such as speeding.

RCMP say they are implementing this because “impaired driving is the leading cause of fatal or serious injury collisions.”

If you refuse the MAS, then you will face the same charges as someone who blew over the legal limit of .08.

This includes:

  • Criminal Code conviction for impaired driving;
  • Impounded vehicle; and
  • An immediate driver’s licence suspension.

From the RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment Traffic Unit, Cpl. Chuck Simm says, MAS is to help discourage someone who has been drinking from getting behind the wheel.

“This is part of our work to help keep our roads and highways safe.”
