Gaelic at Heart in N.S.

By Kelli Rickard May 3, 2024 | 9:13 AM

It’s Gaelic Nova Scotia Month.

Minister of Gaelic Affairs, Allan MacMaster says, “Many Nova Scotians can look back on their family history and find Gaelic speakers who made their home in our province.”

It’s estimated that 50,000 Gaels immigrated here from the Scottish Highlands and islands in the 18th and 19th centuries.

About 270,000 Nova Scotians are descendants of them.

There are about 2,000 Gaelic speakers in this province.

“Gaelic at Heart” is the theme with Celtic music, milling frolics, Gaelic lessons and more scheduled in the province throughout May.
