Senior baseball set to return May 19 in Moncton

By Tara Clow May 1, 2024 | 1:52 PM

Play ball! That will soon be heard at Kiwanis Park in Moncton.

The senior baseball season begins May 19 with the Moncton Mets returning to the field to play the Chatham Ironmen.

General Manager Mark Shaddick says they’ve got a new look and a new, but old name.

“We’ve got a lot of things in the works. We’re not going to say too much about it, but if you follow local sports or provincial sports, you know last year the 1984 to 1989 Mets were inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. To shed a little light on that, that was a big part of the Back to the Future movement. We’re going to work closely to get back to the high level that they had in the community as a sports team. That is what we’re going to strive towards.”

Darrell Christie is back as the Head Coach, Glen Marks is back as third base coach, Greg Hickox is back, and Mike Donahoe is also joining the team as Coach. Shaddick will be a first-base coach.

“A lot of people that don’t follow senior baseball don’t realize how high calibre it is. It’s very exciting baseball, with lots of strikeouts, and lots of home runs. Most of these players have played elite-level baseball through college, so it is considered a semi-pro league. As it gets warmer, you get your crowds. We are in the process, of having a lot of off-field activities for people to make the games more exciting again.”

Tickets can be purchased at the box office.
