Atikokan finds savings to decrease tax rate

By Randy Thoms Apr 27, 2024 | 4:45 PM

The town of Atikokan has identified some savings in its budget for this year.

It brings the possible tax increase to 3.8%.

Treasurer Brandy Coulson says the savings were found without impacting the capital budget or reserves.

“We didn’t look at that at all. That is still the same as last time. What we cut were these M & S (maintenance and services) lines and public works labour reserves.

Some members of council were ready to vote on the budget, but Councillor Gord Knowles would like more time to review the numbers.

“I’d like to see the difference between the 3.8 that you’re presenting in the four and a half,” says Knowles.

“So if I was to vote for it as presented, I know that there isn’t going to be any loss of service or where that extra .7% is coming from. I just outlined all of the lines it was coming from.”

Council is scheduled to make a final decision on the budget on May 13th.

Another special meeting on the budget could come before that date.
