The Thunder Bay Finnish Canadian Historical Society (TBFCHS) is commemorating 50 years in the community.

The society has announced that the Thunder Bay Museum will be hosting the “From the Ashes of the Old: The History, Loss, and Memory of the Finnish Labour Temple” event, taking place on Saturday, April 27.

“As a member-supported organization, we have served as the leading voice of Finnish Canadian history in the region for 50 years through the efforts of the community itself, telling our own stories and preserving our own history,” said TBFCHS President Saku Pinta.

During the event members of the TBFCHS will deliver presentations on topics related to the history, loss, and memory of the Finnish Labour Temple an important cultural landmark lost in a fire on December 22, 2021.

The temple had a 113-year-old time capsule in it and materials from the capsule have been recovered and will be on display for the first time at the event.

The event kicks off at 2:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public and the TBFCHS annual general meeting will be running after it.
