Large barn fire in Dieppe

By Tara Clow Apr 25, 2024 | 11:59 AM

A large barn in Dieppe and its contents have been significantly damaged by fire.

Dieppe Fire Chief Marc Cormier says someone on the Melanson Road property noticed the flames at around 8 pm Wednesday and called 911.

He adds around 35 firefighters from several departments attended, including Moncton, Memramcook, and Shediac, along with two Chief Officers from Dieppe.

The fire was in a non-hydrant area, and water had to be shuttled to the site.

Cormier says initial arriving crews extinguished the fire quickly, but they spent several hours searching for fire extensions within the two-storey building.

The barn was used as a garage, so there was no livestock.

Firefighters kept the blaze contained and a home on the same property wasn’t affected.

There were no injuries.

“I would like to thank the public for giving us the space we needed to operate and to transport water from a nearby hydrant to the scene. To be efficient, firefighters need to operate large vehicles in tight spaces and by not blocking our way, you helped us prevent further loss during a fire,” Cormier stated.

The fire departments, RCMP and Ambulance New Brunswick were on the scene for around three hours.

There’s no word on a cause yet.
