Back Bay fires remain under investigation

Eastern Charlotte Fire and Rescue officials say no injuries were reported after three separate fires in the community of Back Bay.

Fire Chief Justin Johnston says they received a call about a vehicle fire at a wharf around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, Johnston said they also discovered a commercial fishing vessel and a building on fire.

“Adjacent to the parking lot is an office building that they use for storage now, and the door to that place was on fire,” said Johnston.

With four engines and two support vehicles, firefighters were able to save the building, but the car and boat were destroyed.

Johnston said the boat had broken clear from the wharf and floated past the breakwater structure before resting on the shore across the bay.

He said firefighters attached a hose line to the boat and towed it back to shore.

Johnston said the Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the cause of the fires.
