UPDATE: SiRT investigating after man injured during Saint John arrest

The Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a man was injured during an arrest in Saint John.

Police were called to a report of an intoxicated man at a hotel on Portland Street around 10:55 p.m. Saturday.

“Officers arrived on scene and located a suspect who was intoxicated and in an agitated state. He was subsequently arrested by officers for causing a disturbance in a public place,” police said in a news release on Wednesday.

The accused was taken into custody without incident and transported to the police detention facility to be placed in cells until sober.

Police allege the man suffered an injury during a dispute with the arresting officers as he was being put into the holding cell.

While police said the injury was “non-life-threatening,” the Serious Incident Response Team described it as a “serious injury” to his arm.

The man was taken to hospital where he was treated and later released. The officers remain on active duty as the SiRT investigation is underway.

“The Saint John Police considers incidents involving the use of force serious and we continue to hold our members to the highest standard of accountability in this respect,” Chief Robert Bruce said in a statement.

SiRT is an investigative agency, independent of the police, whose mandate is to investigate matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault, domestic violence or other matters of significant public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer.
