Churchill says mental health services needed in Yarmouth

By Kevin Northup Apr 11, 2024 | 12:16 PM

Yarmouth’s MLA is worried about a lack of youth mental health services.

Seven new facilities were announced yesterday by the province, the closest in Bridgewater.

Zach Churchill, who is also the province’s opposition leader says Yarmouth has a serious need.

“We’ve got families and individuals coming into MLA offices that are crying for help. We’ve got staff that are overworked and overburdened at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital,” said Churchill.

He says with no help, the situation will get worse for those in need.

Churchill says they are still waiting for a mental health and addictions hub for Yarmouth Regional Hospital.

“The Conservatives promised to follow through on that. We’re three years into their mandate and there’s been no movement. There is a high need here for mental health and addictions supports.”

The province did say an eighth facility will be announced for the western part of the province.

There is no timeline, and a location has not been selected.
