Thousands of New Brunswick residents could be heading to the polls in early May.

Local government byelections are scheduled to take place on Monday, May 6.

Eleven vacancies in eight local governments throughout the province need to be filled.

  • Arcadia: one councillor (Ward 3)
  • Campobello Island: one councillor (Ward 2)
  • District of Carleton North: one councillor (Ward 4)
  • Grand Lake: one councillor (Ward 2)
  • Île-de-Lamèque: one councillor (Ward 3) and one councillor (Ward 5)
  • Lakeland Ridges: mayor and two councillors (Ward 4)
  • Nackawic-Millville: one councillor (Ward 5)
  • Tracy: one councillor-at-large

Municipal Electoral Officer Kim Poffenroth said they encourage residents in those communities to consider offering.

“Serving on a council allows individuals to give back to their communities and have a say on the future planning in the place where they and their families live,” said Poffenroth.

Nominations opened on Tuesday and will remain open until 2 p.m. on Friday, April 12.

Byelections will only be held if more than one candidate is nominated for a position.
