Grand opening of splash park proposed for June 22

A possible date for a grand opening of the splash park in Fort Frances has been identified.

An advisory committee is recommending June 22nd, the day after school ends.

The actual opening for this year is still a bit fluid.

The town’s Chief Administrative Officer, Travis Rob, says some work needs to get done before the opening.

This includes the installation of sidewalks, sod and fencing.

“We want to try and get as much of the work done that’s requiring us to enter from the cemetery side before we put the fence up. So, I’m anticipating that happening in early June,” says Rob.

Rob says they hope to pour concrete for the sidewalks as soon as possible with cooperation from the weather.

Once the sidewalks are in, sod can be laid down.

That work is to begin after the May long weekend.

Rob says the splash park will remain shut down while that work takes place for safety reasons.

“If we’re doing work in there and we have equipment running around, if you have, you know, fresh concrete curing and things like that. We don’t want to have kids in the park.”

Rob says if a substantial amount of work is complete and there are small things like some light landscaping or setting of benches left, the splash park could be open to the public in advance of the official opening.

There are also plans for a separate traditional ceremony for the large boulders placed around the splash park that symbolize the Seven Grandfather Teachings.

A date for that ceremony is still being organized.
