Town hall set with Premier Houston in Antigonish

Nova Scotia’s premier is scheduled to do a town hall meeting in Antigonish.

According to the Let Antigonish Decide group’s Facebook page, Tim Houston will be at the Heatherton Community Centre for a discussion on the consolidation process.

Admin of the group, Terry Penny says, the premier coming to town is a unique opportunity and encourages everyone to take advantage.

“This will be the first that the premier will be hearing directly from the people, so we are very hopeful that when he does listen to the people of Antigonish, that he will pause the third reading of this bill.”

Penny adds that they really appreciate Houston coming to town but there is one bottom line.

“Please pause this legislation and let people have a vote on the issue.”

Dozens of residents recently spoke out in Province House on the councils’ decision to consolidate the town of Antigonish and the county, saying they should have the right to vote on the matter first.

According to a recent survey by MainStreet Research, more than 75 per cent of residents want to vote on the proposed merger between the town and country.

The town hall meeting with the premier will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
