Recent storm benefits fire season

By CJ Goater Apr 1, 2024 | 9:00 AM

The storm that rolled into northwestern Ontario on March 25, will help moderate the start of Ontario’s Wildland Fire Season.

The season kicks off on Monday and there were concerns due to the unseasonably warm winter and lack of snowfall.

“The recent winter storm across the region has temporarily eased concerns about spring fire potential in parts of the northwest that were snow-free (recently),” explained Fire Information Officer with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Chris Marchand.

“Eventually the moderating effects of this snowfall on the spring fire hazard will wear off as that snow cover retreats under warmer temperatures in April, but we will be monitoring that across the region as we move through the month ahead.”

Ontario Wildland Fire Season marks the start of Ontario burning/fire regulations.
