Fire destroys building at McKay’s Wild Blueberries

By Regis Phillips Mar 30, 2024 | 1:30 PM

A fire has destroyed a building at a well-known Charlotte County business.

McKay’s Wild Blueberries in Pennfield posted to social media saying their equipment garage burned down Friday night, while the farmstand, the receiving station and adjacent homes are OK.

“Thankfully nobody was hurt. I’d like to thank all of the emergency responders that did such a great job on a miserably cold night. We’re not exactly sure what started the fire yet but it doesn’t appear to be suspicious in nature,” McKay’s said in a Facebook post.

Eastern Charlotte Fire Rescue Chief Justin Johnston said the call came in at 9:46 p.m. to a possible structure fire.

Eleven fire trucks from Fundy Bay, St. George, Blacks Harbour, Pennfield, and Bonny River responded, with extra support from the Musquash Fire Rescue Department.

“To have it under control, it took roughly an hour and a half,” said Johnston.

He also said the Office of the Fire Marshal is leading the investigation and doesn’t yet know if they determined the cause of the fire.
