Mariners eliminated from MHL playoffs after OT loss

The season is over for the Yarmouth Mariners.

They lost 4-3 in overtime to the Summerside Western Capitals in Game 5 of their first round MHL playoff series Tuesday night in Summerside.

The Capitals’ William Irvine scored the winner in the first overtime period to clinch the series 4-1.

Yarmouth went ahead 3-2 in the second period, they got goals from Tyler Lee, Kyle McGuire and Jerome Nadeau.

But the Caps would tie it in the third on a goal from Paul Hughes.

Summerside heavily outshot the Mariners 53-28, Thomas Fontaine stopped 49 shots.

The Mariners were trying to get the series back to Yarmouth for a sixth game on Thursday.

But Summerside took their third straight game in the series after two victories at Mariners Centre over the weekend.

The Caps will take on the Amherst Ramblers in the Eastlink South Division final.
