Wildfire season arrives in N.S.

By Kevin Northup Mar 20, 2024 | 12:00 PM

It’s officially wildfire season in Nova Scotia.

Everyone wants to avoid a repeat of last year, when two major wildfires burned in Halifax and Shelburne counties.

You’ll have to check the provincial burn regulations to if you’re able to light a fire.

Yarmouth fire chief Mike Deveau says they usually get grassfire calls this time of year.

“Grassfires can get out of hand pretty fast. These fires kill small animals and destroy habitats for birds and nesting,” says Deveau.

He says there are more negatives than positives when it comes to burning grass.

Deveau says it’s important to keep fires contained and away from any vegetation.

“We don’t want to make huge brush piles, you want to keep everything manageable. A good 3 metres away is a good rule of thumb.”
