A 22-year-old man charged with starting the largest wildfire in our province’s history has pleaded not guilty.

Dalton Clark Stewart of Villagedale in Shelburne County is facing three charges in relation to the wildfire in Barrington Lake that destroyed dozens of homes and structures last year.

Stewart did not appear in court in Shelburne Wednesday morning.

His lawyer Phil Star entered the not guilty plea on his behalf for all three charges.

The wildfire near Barrington Lake broke out late last May, and was more than 23,000 hectares at its peak.

The massive fire burned for nearly two months.

Dozens of homes and structure were burned while thousands of people were evacuated from their homes.

The case will be back in court again on June 5 to determine a trial date.
