Slow start leads to Game 1 loss for Mariners

The Yarmouth Mariners are down 1-0 in their first-round playoff series.

They allowed four first period goals on their way to a 7-3 loss to the Western Capitals in Game 1 in Summerside Saturday night.

The Western Capitals, who finished 27 points ahead of the Mariners in the standings, scored four times in just under five minutes on goaltender Thomas Fontaine.

The Mariners would then trade the next six goals of the game with the Caps through the second and third period, they were outshot 38-21 in the game.

Fontaine was pulled 30 seconds into the third period for Will Forbes, after Summerside made it 6-1.

Keefe Marshall, Will Chisholm and Cole McKeigan scored for Yarmouth, they scored twice on the powerplay.

The Mariners dressed ten forwards and eight defenders, they were missing forward Michael Marquez and defensemen Jefferson Coffin and Tyler Lee, who’s been out since Christmas.

The teams go right back at it for Game 2 in Summerside Sunday night.

The series shifts to Yarmouth next Friday and Saturday for Games 3 and 4.
