It was a cold, wet night after a 39-year-old man tried to swim away from police in Halifax.

It was Monday, when RCMP say a Mazda was seen speeding throughout the city.

It was reported stolen out of West Hants and nearly hit a number of cars.

Later that night, officers tried to stop the car by using a spike belt, but it kept on driving.

They then received a report of two suspicious people in the Lakewood Dr. area.

Police eventually found and arrested a 30-year-old woman, who has been released.

The man took off and jumped into Lake William. He swam to the middle of the lake but began to struggle and had to be rescued.

The 39-year-old will be in court in April facing these charges:

  • Dangerous Operation;
  • Flight from Peace Officer;
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime;
  • Operation while Impaired;
  • Failure to Comply with Order (four counts);
  • Operating Motor Vehicle without Valid Driver’s Licence (Motor Vehicle Act);
  • Driving Motor Vehicle without Motor Vehicle Liability Police (Motor Vehicle Act);
  • Operating Unregistered Vehicle (Motor Vehicle Act).
