Thunder Bay’s last open outdoor rink has officially closed for the season.
Ultimately the continuation of warm weather has led to worsening conditions on the ice at the waterfront leading to its closure for the year.
“We had hoped to remain open for March Break, unfortunately, the warm weather has made ice conditions unsafe for skating,” said Manager, of Parks & Open Spaces Cory Halvorsen. “With continued high temperatures in the forecast, we won’t be able to reopen the rink.”
City council is monitoring the usage of outdoor rinks from year to year, and it is uncertain how this year’s warm weather will impact potential permanent rink closures heading into next winter.
